In sports, especially in a small school, there is pressure put on by your peers to whether or not you are a good enough athlete to continue on into college, or if it's all just hype. One of the most popular topics talked about in school is how good you are as an athlete, and most of the time it doesn't even matter if that person goes to the same school you do. As a transfer student, I was very nervous for basketball season since everyone knew I played basketball and that was the reason I came to Independent. The first home game, especially, was very nerve racking as I seeked out to "prove" myself to the whole student body.
This has been an ongoing factor for me for a very long time since I grew up playing sports and am constantly trying out for different teams or going to different camps. There is always a cloud of pressure that I put on myself that I have to prove myself better than the hype. This will continue to plague me as I go onto college because I am looking to get a scholarship for basketball to a university. This will have to be something I have to work at: not to look for satisfaction in what other people say about me, but what I do with my life and how I treat others.

  1. So, it seems your identity is very tied into sports. What would you be like--how would you change--how would your life change--if you could no longer play at all?
