Interpretation of identity

The society empowers living people their identities and social responsibilities. Everyone is born to have a name which can be considered as an initial identity that will accompany the person for a long time. But what's in a name? In Invisible Man, the narrator never mentions his name since the biased identities that others put on him are not worthwhile to present, and there is no possible mean to condense his true self into a few words. At the end of the novel, Ellison critically points out that " Who knows but that, on the lower frequencies, I speak for you?" This thoughtful sentence directly puts readers in reflection and meditation. In fact, everyone plays the role of the invisible man at some points of life. Under the influence of conventional drawing techniques, I was taught to hold the board straight instead of laying it flat, to grab the middle part of the pencil instead of the front. With the goal of illustrating precise yet lifeless dots, lines and shadows, I could feel nothing but the heat emitted by the studio's light. Deep in my mind, I knew art deserved much more. It was in later days when I came to an epiphany that through the juxtaposition of paints and lines, art was indeed a media of self-expression and self-exploration. In current society, modern art is still not commonly accepted, but I firmly believe that one day people will understand the message lingers behind each artwork.
Just like the invisible man goes through his own metamorphosis at different stages of life, "college student" will soon be my new identity, indicating a new start of my life. College is a stage which students will gradually transform into adults who are ready to take their social responsibilities. I am expected to think critically and maturely as well as to learn about practical skills for living. Even though the future is unpredictable, I know that I will continue adding diversity to myself. That's why I decide to study abroad----- to push myself out of the comfort zone and embrace the unknown. Throughout my four- year high school life, I have been in four different environment (based on objective reasons). It can be hard because I sometimes feel like a fish out of water whenever entering in a new school, so I expect to find my future college a place I truly belong.

  1. Nicely done, Tiffany. I love your references to art and to Invisible Man here. I'm sure college will be a place where you can BE and GROW for a while.
